Free to Fail is a work-in-progress showing where dance works are presented in draft form. The public provides feedback with the guidance of a facilitator. Since 2025, the program has also included professional mentorship to help artists structure and formulate their needs before and after the showing.
The Choreographers' Association, in collaboration with American choreographer Alyssa Gersony, have hosted the Free to Fail work-in-progress showings since January 2022. The goal is to give choreographers the opportunity to present their ideas to a test audience. The public takes an active role in providing structured feedback. The feedback approach blends Liz Lerman's Critical Response Process, Fieldwork, and other methods according to the needs of the artist.
Participants have described this process as an essential tool for experimentation that also enables collective reflection among the public. In this way, Free to Fail functions as a container for choreographers to understand how their artistic choices are read and interpreted by audiences.
