About the project
. bunker breath . the last sway . (working title) is a new dance work in development by Līga Ūbele and Ainslie Allan, exploring an imagined underground bunker: a place designed to protect us from the world while also forcing us into proximity and quiet urgency with one another.
Breath and sway are the starting point and essential foundation of our shared embodied research. They are simple, ancient, bodily rhythms that help us endure, adapt and connect. We breathe the same air, exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide not only with one another but with trees and other life around us. Breath connects us to geological timescales of the earth itself, while swaying connects us to gravity and offers a way to regulate the body. Together, these rhythms open into larger questions of survival, adaptation and mortality. Through breath, sway, repetition, vocalisation, durational movement, poetry and improvisation, we explore the tensions between knowing something is happening yet being unable to act; between urgency and stillness; and between fear of imminent endings and the body’s ancient capacity to adapt and continue.
The bunker becomes both a literal shelter and a metaphor for human attempts to contain, control and survive. As the imagined bunker becomes increasingly real, simple invitations may take on different meanings: a request to gather might become a question of limited space; sharing the same air might become a question of resources; a calming score might become difficult when the conditions around it change. Through these shifts, we are interested in how we share space and resources when they become limited, how we negotiate difference when our needs and values conflict, and what happens when we know we are approaching a tipping point yet still cannot seem to move.
