hello - bye (2018)

About the project

Привет – Atā (Hello – Bye) is a contemporary dance performance inspired by the complex relationship between Latvians and Russian-speaking communities in Latvia, shaped by a shared yet often difficult history. The work explores questions of identity, belonging, and the stereotypes that continue to influence relationships between these communities.

Rather than avoiding these tensions, the performance invites audiences into an open dialogue, encouraging empathy and mutual understanding without diminishing or offending the identity or culture of any individual or group.

The performance was created as Līga Ūbele’s graduation work at the Latvian Academy of Culture and premiered at Ģertrūdes Street Theatre in May 2018. It was later presented at the music and arts festival Laba Daba in August 2019.
