absurd hero (2019)

About the project

Absurd Hero is a short-length contemporary dance performance inspired by Albert Camus’ The Myth of Sisyphus. It questions whether it is always necessary to work until exhaustion and suffer in order to experience satisfaction after reaching a goal. Why do we value achievements less when they come easily, without extreme effort?

Like Sisyphus, the performer is caught in an endless cycle of striving. Resistance bands become a physical metaphor for the constant tension that restrains her, pulling her back each time she reaches towards the top. Through repetition, struggle, and physical resistance, the performance explores the paradox of human effort. Perhaps, as Camus suggests, happiness is not found at the finish line, but in the act of climbing itself.

The performance was created within the project Public Climate / Private Weather by the New Theatre Institute of Latvia.
