Līga Ūbele is an independent dance artist and scenographer based in Riga, Latvia. Her artistic practice explores various art forms and disciplines, with movement always being the core foundation for all creative work. Līga is interested in developing sustainable working methods that prioritize balance over exhaustion and her work fosters dialogue between the body and the spaces within and outside of it.
Līga holds a Bachelor's degree in Contemporary Dance Art from the Latvian Academy of Culture (2018) and a Master’s degree in Scenography from the Art Academy of Latvia (2021). Throughout her career, she has contributed to a wide array of contemporary dance and interdisciplinary projects, taking on roles as a performer, choreographer, scenographer, and costume designer.
Her latest and most significant choreographic work is “Untitled Movement Lecture” (2022), which was featured at the Baltic Dance Platform 2024. In scenography, Līga highlights her contributions to two Latvian contemporary dance productions: “Entrails” (2024) by Rūta Pūce and “Femina” (2021) by Sabīne Neilande. In late 2021 and early 2022 she participated in “Magic Carpets” residency in Ķengarags, suburb of Riga, where she worked with local elderly community and explored themes of cultural and physical emptiness in the area. She often takes part in collaborative projects and values collective artistic practices. She is coordinator of the work-in-progress showing event “Free to Fail” organized by “Choreographers Association” of Latvia and American choreographer Alyssa Gersony.
